ABOUT THE EVENT

Alliance for an Energy Efficient Economy (AEEE) presents the fourth edition of its annual flagship event, the ‘Forum on Energy Efficiency and Decarbonisation 2024 (FEED 2024).’

FEED places a robust emphasis on decarbonisation and smart energy management, which is crucial for achieving a net-zero economy and encourages vital knowledge transfer in technology adoption across the value chain. As a convergence point for stakeholders within India’s energy ecosystem, FEED facilitates interactions and opportunities for enhanced business competitiveness through energy efficiency and decarbonisation.

Aligned with the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration and COP28’s agenda, FEED 2024 will focus on ‘Achieving India’s energy efficiency commitment by 2030: Fuelling investments, creating green jobs, and forging key alliances.’ This edition aims to foster meaningful dialogue, issuing a call to action to accelerate energy efficiency across sectors through collective efforts, cooperation, knowledge sharing and creating opportunities across industries, governments, and communities. Join us in this endeavour to create opportunities and shape a sustainable future.

Session 1: Doubling Energy Efficiency Progress: Global Insights, Local Implications

Global efforts to double energy efficiency progress by 2030 gained significant momentum in 2023. The G20 leaders, in their New Delhi Declaration, took note of a 'Voluntary Action Plan on Doubling the Rate of Energy Efficiency Improvement by 2030.' They agreed to focus on a voluntary roadmap to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 7.3 target. This session will delve into international cooperation around energy efficiency in light of these recent developments, and their implications on India in terms of driving the clean energy transition, job creation, reducing energy costs, attracting investments, and ensuring energy security. The session will also bring to the fore AEEE’s latest recommendations around operationalising some of the high-impact energy efficiency opportunities identified during India’s G20 Presidency. The session will incorporate the live audience’s opinion through polling on the way forward.

It will address the substantial investment gap projected until 2030 and the annual investment target of $840 billion set by the G20 Strategic Action Plan. The discussion will primarily focus on strategies to bridge this funding gap, exploring key sources of capital, including the utilisation of private investment and blended finance mechanisms. The conversation will emphasise tackling barriers, such as the absence of scalable business models, and draw insights from successful strategies in the renewable energy sector, such as the use of green bonds. The impact of municipal incentives on energy-efficient buildings will be explored, with a specific focus on assessing their scalability. Furthermore, the session will delve into discussions regarding the feasibility of implementing the PACE model in India and designing Priority Sector Lending (PSL) to incentivise banks for financing energy efficiency projects. In addition to these topics, the session will consider the potential role of corporate reporting mechanisms, such as the BRSR core, in motivating large corporations to enhance energy efficiency throughout their supply chains.

The current ESCO market in India represents only a small fraction of the total energy efficiency investments. This session will focus on finding the secret sauce to tackle the growth challenges in India's ESCO market. Could a dedicated M&V platform based on internationally recognised protocols like the IPMVP automate the validation of performance of ESCO projects and bring speed, consistency, and transparency? Besides M&V, the session will focus on different approaches for creating demand including the non-energy benefits of energy efficiency to increase participation. The session will also touch upon tapping diverse sources of financing and de-risking solutions.

The session has been planned as a panel discussion. It will discuss the importance of energy efficiency (EE) and demand flexibility (DF) in shaping India’s energy requirements. The discussion will hover around unveiling the potential of energy efficiency and DF individually and together in providing grid flexibility. Further, the session will cater to the value propositions that can be achieved with the integration of EE and DF, potential business models for DF, and the regulatory updates supporting the implementation of DF on a large scale. The session will make the audiences more aware of the recent developments in the area of EE and DF, motivate them to possibly implement EE measures in their industries/organizations, and provide new insights for business opportunities in this area.

With CO2 emissions from buildings needing a drastic reduction of over 95% by 2050, ensuring over 85% compliance with zero carbon-ready building energy codes is imperative. The air-side load, constituting about 14% of the overall building energy load, highlights the critical need for efficient HVAC systems. This session will discuss cutting-edge industry practices for optimising the air-side, vital for reducing OPEX, meeting regulatory commitments, and enhancing productivity in future buildings.
